⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Synopsis:
Fleeing from a relentless army, Todd has carried a desperately wounded Viola right into the hands of their worst enemy, Mayor Prentiss.
Immediately separated from Viola, Todd finds that everything is shrouded in secrets. And then one day, the bombs begin to explode.
What I Think:
I can't really give a profound reason for why I gave this book a 4 star rating instead of a 5 star one. I enjoyed it and there wasn't anything I particularly disliked about it. I think I'm just comparing this series to Patrick Ness's other books (A Monster Calls.. More Than This) which I gave 5 stars to. I'm missing an emotional connection in this series so far.
Likes:
I like the fact that every time I think I know where this book is going, it makes a sharp U-turn. Ness is full of surprises as always and the push and pull between the 2 forces in this trilogy is intense. Ness makes a clear depiction of the gradual destruction of humanity and the battle between good and evil AND the lesser evil.
The great thing about this trilogy is that anyone can read it and enjoy it. If you're a deep analytical thinker, these books will suffice. If you're not really into the whole aspect of the whole revolutionary/political spectrum of things, you can still enjoy this book for the simple fact that it's packed with action and adventure. The story line kicks but whether you understand the deeper meaning or not.
I love the fact that there are so many things going on at once in this book, but Ness still manages to guide us through it all without completely losing us. It's like he starts us off in a dark room, but lifts the blinds a little at a time, shedding light, making us appreciate and savor every moment a one step at a time.
I also like that he separated the 2 main characters, Viola and Todd. We got to see who Viola was without Todd. Whether she was strong for Todd, or strong because it's part of her disposition.
It's heartbreaking to watch something unravel, but it becomes even more beautiful than before when you watch loose threads come back together.
Dislikes:
Although I enjoyed all the running around and dropped bombs, I think Ness kinda got lost in all the action and forget to address some more pressing matters. Ironically the word "Answer" is included in the title, however that is precisely what this book lacked. Answers.
So many questions are still looming over my head. What did the rest of Todd's book from his mother say? How did Mayor Prentiss even come to be in power? What really happened to Todd's father? How did Viola's ship crash?
