⭐️⭐️⭐️.5
Synopsis:
Madeleine is sick. As in "she can't go outside the house because she might die" sick. 18 years of no contact with anyone but her mom and nurse, Carla.
But just when Maddy thinks she's happy with the way things are, Olly changes that.
Moving into the house next to Maddy, Olly becomes a beacon of hope, and she must decide if her life is worth making that hope into a reality.
Why the 3 star rating?
Well, I gave this a 3 stars not because I thought it sucked or was written poorly. I actually found Nicola Yoon's writing to be very simple yet captivating. It flowed well and I loved the visuals she included.
However, I thought she played it safe. I felt as though a lot of substance was missing from this book. It had so much more potential. The characters could have been expanded on. I would've liked to know more about Olly, or more about the mother but the views were very limited.
I AM glad I read this book. I enjoyed it despite my overall feeling toward it.
Maybe it's just me. I'm not too big on the whole contemporary genre. . .
What I liked:
I loved the concept of this book; also the cover. BUT! It was not a cover buy. I actually jumped on the bandwagon super late. I bought it a few months before the movie was released and then actually decided to pick it up and read it a week before the moive started showing.
I sailed through it pretty quickly. The whole - 'never been out of house before' - thing just really intrigued me and the end totally through me off, which is a bonus in my book.
I think every reader likes being thrown off course. Quite frankly, I don't regret adding it to my book shelf at all. A 3 star rating is good according to my standards.
