Synopsis
Jeremiah feels good inside his own skin. That is, when he's in his own Brooklyn neighborhood. But now he's going to be attending a fancy prep school in Manhattan, and black teenage boys don't exactly fit in there. So it's a surprise when he meets Ellie the first week of school. In one frozen moment their eyes lock, and after that they know they fit together--even though she's Jewish and he's black. Their worlds are so different, but to them that's not what matters. Too bad the rest of the world has to get in their way.
I Guess??
I have to keep reminding myself that this is a middle school read so I can’t have such high expectations for profoundness. BUT, then again, I HAVE read several middle grade books that have touched me deeply; and this just wasn’t one of them…
I mean, it was good. Don’t get me wrong. But for the plot of the book.. I expected some heavier content. Racism is a heavy topic and I don’t think it was communicated enough throughout the story. We don’t really see REAL consequences of being in an interracial relationship or being a Black person found in the wrong neighborhood. All we get is huge leap to end consequence. I feel like a major part of the story was skipped and we just fast forwarded to end.
Majority of the book was just the two characters fawning over each other. We didn’t get to read much about the joy they had in each other or the opposition they got from being with each other.
All in All
I liked the characters. I liked that they both had problems aside from each other and racism. I do feel like we got a decent glance into their lives as individuals. It's good for a light read, considering that it IS a middle grade book.
