Amy Tan is one of my all time favorite writers, but this review is totally not biased. I’ve had favorite authors disappoint me before.
The Moon Lady is captivating, warm, sentimental and magical. I honestly enjoyed it so much. Amy Tan has gone from writing adult books about divorce and family issues, to writing children’s books about adventure and imagination. Here are a few things The Moon Lady had that made me give it a 5 star rating.
Cultural Information. I love that Amy Tan gave us descriptions on Chinese Tradition. Although The Moon Lady is a story in Chinese culture, she didn’t just talk about that. We saw what foods are eaten in Chinese tradition and how they are prepared. I literally felt like I was apart of young Ying-Ying’s adventure, running with her throughout the busy streets of China.
Illustration. Of course this is included. the pictures were very detailed and alive. The colors and scenes really depicted how China looks around the New Years. Magical. It really just brought so much enjoyment and character to the book.
Family. Amy Tan shows us the importance of family and how much wisdom can come from listening to the elders in your family. The grandparents really are the pillars and the foundation of the family.
Inception. Amy Tan has told a story within a story. Come on. It doesn’t get any better than that.
