I'm Not Dying With You Tonight by Kimberly Jones and Gilly Segal

⭐️⭐️⭐️.5

Synopsis

Over the course of one night, two girls with two very different backgrounds must rely on each other to get through the violent race riot that has enveloped their city.
Lena has her killer style, her awesome boyfriend, and a plan. She knows she's going to make it big. Campbell, on the other hand, is just trying to keep her head down and get through the year at her new school.
When both girls attend the Friday-night football game, what neither expects is for everything to descend into sudden mass chaos. Chaos born from violence and hate. Chaos that unexpectedly throws them together.
They aren't friends. They hardly understand the other's point of view. But none of that matters when the city is up in flames, and they only have each other to rely on if they're going to survive the night.

First of All

Can we get a round of a applause for this cover art though?! When you take the dust jacket off and look at the naked book, boy, are you in for a treat! The title is also raised like brail letters. It’s awesome.

Anyways

This book isn’t what I was expecting. I guess my mind kinda went to end of the world setting. I didn’t expect the plot to be something so practical like a riot. Which is totally okay! I love that the book is based on one night. The authors really got the chance to be more descriptive and add a whole lot more detail without worrying about having to skip days or anything like that. It’s really a genius idea and it’s my first time reading a book like this.

The story was riveting and I finished it rather fast because there were no rest points throughout the book. I think I didn’t enjoy it much as I could have because I could predict what would happen majority of the time.

Characters

When it came to Lena’s POV, I sometimes thought her dialogue was a little corny and over exaggerated. Just sometimes. Her constant obsession with Black was rather annoying. That made me comes really close to forsaking this book all together. I did enjoy Lena’s POV more over all because it was just more going on with her.

I think Campbell’s POV was spot on. The writing for her was great. No complaints there. I did find myself less interested in her chapters because for the most part she was just scared and doubtful the entire time. Which is accurate for her disposition in the story.

Dislikes

  • Easily predictable
  • Lena's obsession with Black
  • Lena’s weird, corny slang
