Synopsis
Kate Harker and August Flynn's families rule opposite ends of Verity, a grisly metropolis where violent acts summon real monsters: bloodsucking Malchai; clawing Corsai; and soul-stealing Sunai. The truce that keeps the families at peace is crumbling, and August is sent to spy on Kate. But when Harker's men try to kill her and pin it on the Flynns, August and Kate find themselves running from both sides, in a city where monsters are real...
Brace Yourselves
Really hope people don’t hate me for this. But here goes...
I had a really hard time enjoying this book to the full capacity I thought possible. What frustrated me is that this could have easily been avoided. Seeing as how this is my first read by Victoria Schwab, I will not write her off as a writer (hehe, that was a good one).
Concept/Writing Style
As soon as the book begins, we are thrust into a world that has already reached its climax. I had no helpful information on how monsters came to be, when they came to be or what the condition of the world actually is. There were 3 groups of monsters and for the first 150 pages or so, I had no idea what the difference was between all of them. I had a hard time visualizing people and monsters. I’m still not even sure how to describe August. I know Kate has blonde hair and a scar. But I feel as though I went through this book with everything being a blur.
Kate Harker
Oh Lawd! From the very get go this girl was sooo frickin annoying. I’m getting really tired of authors portraying girls to be these weak vessels that have to go extremely overboard to exceed society’s depiction of us. This girl tried way to hard too be hardcore that it made her look stupid instead. She starts off her string of irritating behavior by setting fire to a school for the sole reason of “I just want to go home.” Majority of my bad rating is due to her.
Some Stuff Just Didn’t Add Up
I thought it was unrealistic that Kate bore fatal wounds towards the majority of the end of the book. She was doing more than she should have been able to. Are you seriously telling me some little teenage girl could survive all of that and still have strength and blood left?? This girl was doing way too much. Fighting 2 Malchai at the same time. Being punched and kicked in the stomach when she already had a fatal gash there to begin with. Being slammed on the concrete floor and thrown into walls. Like for real? And she can still fight a buff dude and a Malchai that break into the house? NO
It really sucks because the concept of the book was good. There were parts in the book where I couldn’t put it down and i just had to see what would happen. The action was pretty consistent and Schwab was good with slowing down when she needed to. The only reason I was able to keep reading instead of forfeiting from confusion is because I’m pretty good with continuing a book even though I don’t know exactly what’s going on. I have a high tolerance for oblivion and I’m pretty patient when it comes to seemingly endless moments of uncertainty.
I’m still confused on the tally marks & the whole hungry thing. I have so many questions that I’m hoping will be addressed in the second installment.
Ehhhhh
Some of what I did enjoy was the relationship between the 3 Sunai. I also liked the chapters that consisted of August and Kate attending school together. Don't get me wrong. The book wasn't horrible and I do plan on reading the second in hopes that some things will improve.
