Kin (The Good Neighbors) by Holly Black

⭐️⭐️⭐️

Synopsis

Rue knows something is not right when her mother mysteriously disappears. Especially when she starts seeing things she feels like she’s not supposed to see. Desperate to find out the truth, she turns to her father. But before her father could give her any answers, the truth find her instead. What is Rue? She knows she’s more than just human.

Wait, What?

So, when I ordered this, I didn’t know that it would be a comic. I was under the impression that it was an actual novel. Consequences of ordering from thriftbooks.com where they hardly tell you diddly squat.

But

It was by Holly Black, so of course I have no regrets. I love everything she’s ever written. But this review obviously isn’t biased because I gave it a 3 star rating.

Why 3 Stars?
Why?? Well, because it was just lacking something. The books are so thin and by the time I was finished I felt like I virtually learned nothing. Not to mention the main character, Rue, looked like she was about 30 years old. I mean, was she supposed to be in high school or??

I think majority of the first installment consisted of Rue running aimlessly around and random people ambushing her throughout the book. There wasn’t much guided direction. There was no build up or anticipation to anything. It was just like —BOOM— there.
Does that make sense?

However

I really enjoyed seeing Holly Black’s writing graphically come to life. I feel like this series could be joined with the Tithe series. I’m pretty sure the series will get better as I continue. I’m enjoying despite the shortcomings. Hopefully, a movie or series will be next in the near future.
