Favorite Stand Alones of the Year & Counting

Ryan Dean West is one of my favorite main characters of the year so far. He's shy, & cautious, but maintains this air of spunk & boldness about him. I'm usually good at foreshadowing & predicting someone's actions, but Ryan constantly surprises me throughout the entire book. This one is a must read!

This book was a roller coaster of emotions. It was beautifully written. I love stories that are centered around the capabilities of children, because we so often underestimate our young people! Especially those who lead less fortunate lives such as these three main characters, Raphael, Rato, & Gardo. These may be fictional boys, but what they do is reality. Spending day in & day out digging in trash, & sometimes not finding anything valuable to show for it. Mulligan made me see through their eyes & feel what they felt. Neglected & disrespected. The ending was perfect, not a thing I would change with this one.

This one started off a little slow & tested my patience personally. The book started with the plot already in effect without revealing the source of it. Yeah, confusing I know.. But I knew that Leveen wanted everything to unravel beautifully, instead of revealing things in sequence like things usually happen. This book has taught me to enjoy the anticipation of something beautiful before it has fully unraveled. I love the concept of this book, (cyber bullying) & I love the dialogue. It's clean & cut, articulate, & right to the point. I love that the plot of the book begins at small chat, & just detours into serious town, because that's how life often is. We think things are gonna be one way & they end up being another way. Happens all the time.

This read reminds me a little of Paper Towns, except 5 times better! (sorry John Green) This book is raw emotion. From habits, sobs, & frustrations, to interventions, laughter, & apologies. Kendra is pressured to be as good as she can, to compensate for her older brother Grayson, whose OCD completely takes over his life, and apparently the whole family's lives. Somehow, they end up stuck with each other on a road trip ,. For what? Read & find out!! FYI, you'll probably cry, laugh, & call a few people jerks!
